Dear Friend of the St. Jerome Institute,
This week is a time for celebration and reflection. As we mark the beginning of Giving Week with the feast of St. Pio of Pietrelcina – lovingly remembered as Padre Pio – we also embark on a new adventure at the Saint Jerome Institute.
It is also the day we launch an exciting new program to support the lifelong education of our friends and supporters: The Society for the Renewal of the Catholic Mind. The society offers a forum to advance your own education by considering the fundamental questions that have animated history. It serves as a bridge between our school and the broader community of individuals and families we wish to serve.
As we invite you to join us in this new project, we turn to Padre Pio for guidance. The great Italian friar and mystic once said:
“As gifts increase in you, let your humility grow, for you must consider that everything is given to you on loan.”
The excitement we feel this week is indicative of the energy and momentum that has defined SJI since our founding. Just over one year ago, the founders of SJI transformed an ambitious education plan into a fully operational classical liberal arts high school. Joyful discussions and discoveries emerged as a hallmark of the SJI experience, as did academic distinctions. These gifts have only increased in the first months of the new 2020-2021 school year. And so, as Padre Pio recognized, our humility must grow—and with it, our gratitude. We know our exceptional students, parents, faculty, and Board members ultimately belong to Christ – and so does our work at SJI.
The opportunity to participate in the renewal of Catholic education is a tremendous honor—and it’s one we feel called to share with the broader community. To that end, in a spirit of humility and gratitude, we invite you to participate in Giving Week in a very special way.
Will you please consider making a tax-deductible gift of $150 to support SJI and enroll in a new community of lifelong learners: the Society for the Renewal of the Catholic Mind? You will receive unlimited access to the following resources and events:
Invitations to exclusive lectures by the creators of SJI and other prominent guests
Access to podcasts on subjects in literature, politics, the arts, and philosophy relevant to liberal education
Early registration for Great Books seminars and other SJI events
Inclusion in Coffee Discussions (with me in-person and on Zoom) exploring questions of culture, education, and parenting
We are pleased to offer two levels of elevated memberships:
-Friends who make a $1,000 gift are enrolled as Premium Members and receive an exclusive invitation to a special evening of dinner and discussion at the SJI Gala (currently planned for the spring of 2021).
-Friends who make a $5,000 gift are enrolled as Honored Members. In addition to the benefits of a Premium Member, Honored Members are given a unique opportunity to build an SJI-inspired library at home. Four times a year you will receive a work of literature or philosophy, accompanied by a personalized letter from the SJI team discussing the meaning and significance of the work.
Stay tuned for the first Society for the Renewal of the Catholic Mind event, which will take place in the near future! You will receive a free copy of Stratford Caldecott’s Beauty for Truth’s Sake if you join during Giving Week (the last day is Sept. 30th, the Feast of St. Jerome.) You don’t want to miss out on this important source of inspiration for SJI.
We have one more piece of exciting news to share. Your gift of any amount to SJI will be DOUBLED, thanks to Dr. Maria Marta Ferreyra and her husband Mr. Jeffrey Reminga, who generously offered to match up to $10,000 received during Giving Week. If you are enrolling in the Society, your gift of enrollment ($150) will be doubled and become a $300 gift.
Please feel free to call or email Monica Guza, SJI director of development, at (202)-788-2706 ex. 402 or her email: email@example.com for more information. You can also make an online gift or mail a check to St. Jerome Institute, P.O. Box 291 Hyattsville, MD 20781.
As you prayerfully consider becoming an active part of the SJI project, please reflect on the words of St. Padre Pio:
“Never let us put aside the thought of our ultimate aim. And what is this ultimate aim? To know God, principally, is why he conceived our days, our years. Therefore, let us try never to forget this ultimate aim, for everything depends on it. And for what reason? To serve him with faith, with love, and with constancy. Let us try to excel in all of this, then.”
Thank you and God bless you.
The Saint Jerome Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization as of June 14, 2018. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Take Advantage of the 2020 CARES Act tax deduction to Support SJI! Previously, taxpayers could itemize deductions or take the standard deduction, but could not do both. Now, the CARES Act allows the approximately 86% of taxpayers who choose to take the standard deduction, to also take an above-the-line deduction for charitable gifts of up to $300 for individuals and $600 for married couples.
What this means for you, is you can now deduct charitable gifts of $300 or $600 from your gross income to determine your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), and then further reduce your AGI by deducting an additional $12,400 or $24,800 (the 2020 standard deduction for individuals and married couples), to decrease your 2020 tax liability.
Previously, taxpayers who itemize deductions could only deduct 60% of their AGI. Now, the CARES Act allows taxpayers to deduct 100% of their AGI, and to carry over excess contributions for up to 5 additional years (subject to the usual 60% limitation).
