11th Day of Christmas

The hurdy-gurdy is a string instrument which dates back to the Middle Ages and predates the organ as the liturgical instrument of choice. It features drone strings, which make it sound like a hybrid of a violin and the bagpipes. The drone strings are suited to accompany vocal singing, like Gregorian chant, which is the focus of the first year of music study at SJI. Our students will explore additional folk music traditions performed using a hurdy-gurdy during their studies and leisure at SJI.
